  1. The trouble with prisons is that (1) despite what some politicians say, they don’t turn out good citizens. On the other (2) hand there is always a balance to be struck (3) between what is good for society and what is a good feeling for society. It is common enough for people of sound mind and left-wing tendencies (4) to openly admit that revenge is sweet and realise the fact that the kid who broke (5) into your car and stole the radio is now languishing in jail. Unfortunately, that same kid is (6) not only being punished but is also learning how to steal better. (7) when he’s much older he’ll be committing more serious crimes more frequently. This pattern (8) of crime is being repeated all over the world especially where young offenders mix freely with hardened criminals. There is no easy solution. (9) only by preventing juvenile offenders from being sent to adult prisons is there any hope of reversing the trend. In the (10) opposite way it is vital to remember that the harder we punish the harder the offenders become.
