The Tay is one of 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam, the second largest after the Kinh. The Tay people speak the Tay language, a language belonging to the Thai genus of the Kra-Dai language family. The Tay people live mainly in the low areas of northern Vietnam. The Tay and Nung people have the origin and close relationship with the Trang in Guangxi, China. The Tay mainly reside in the northern midland and mountainous provinces. Besides, in recent times, the Tày people have migrated to some Central Highlands provinces such as Dak Lak and Lam Dong. The Tay people wear colorful costumes. The Tay’s traditional costumes are made of self-woven cotton, dyed uniformly on men’s and women’s outfits, with almost no decorative patterns. The decorative accessories are jewelry made from silver and copper. The Tay ethnic costume can be considered as one of the simplest outfits of 54 ethnic groups. The costumes are simple but very meaningful to them.
