V. Fill in a word
When we (..1..) foreign countries, we see and learn all sorts of things that we can never see (..2..) learn at home, though we may read about (..3..) in books and magazines, and see pictures of them at the cinema. The best way to learn geography is to travel, (..4..) the best way to get to know and understand the people in (..5..) countries is to meet them in their (..6..) homes. Most people on visits (..7..) other countries take a (..8..) with them and photograph anything they are (..9..) in. Those photographs will remind them of the happy time (..10..) had on a visit to a foreign country.
VI. Read and answer
An artist went to a beautiful part of the country for a holiday, and satyed with a farmer. Every day he went out with his paints and his brushes and painted from morning to evening, and then when it got dark, he went back to the farm and had a good dinner before going to bed. At the end of his holiday, he wanted to pay the farmer, but the farmer said, “No, I do not want money, but give me one of your pictures. What is money? In a week it will all be finished, but your painting will be still be here.” The artist was very pleased and thanked the farmer for saying such kind things about the paintings. The farmer smiled and answered, “It is not that. I have a son in London. He wants to become an artist. When he comes here next month, I will show him your picture, and then he will not want to be an artist any more, I think.”
1. Where did the artist spend his holiday?
2. What did he do during his holiday?
3. What did the farmer ask the artist for at the end of the holiday?
4. Why was the artist very pleased with the farmer’s request?
5. Did the farmer’s son want to become an artist any more after he had seen the artist’s picture?
