The Hmong people living in Vietnam have about 80,000 people belonging to the linguistic group: Hmong – Dao. The Hmong (from Guizhou-Yunnan-Guangxi-China) moved into Vietnam about 300 years ago today, with many waves, scattered throughout the long period until the end of the 19th century. The Hmong people came to Vietnam for a reason: in the history of Chinese feudal dynasties, there were many brutal and bloody wars, suppressing many ethnic groups (including the Hmong people), to gain power rule the country, causing the Hmong people to go everywhere. The first point, they arrived at Meo Vac on the Dong Van plateau (Ha Giang), the first place of Vietnam. Therefore, Hmong living in Vietnam consider Dong Van plateau to be their homeland’s ancestral land. The Hmong are divided into 4 groups: Hmong Hoa (Hmong Tent), Black Hmong (Hmong Du), Blue Hmong (Hmong Lord), White Hmong (Hmong Du). Although there are 4 different Hmong groups, the basic language and culture are similar, the difference between groups is mainly based on women’s costumes.
The Hmong is an ethnic group of Viet Nam living mostly in the Northern mountainous regions as well as Nghe An province, near Laos. They speak their own language called Hmongic, which is a language in the Hmong-Mien language family. Besides, they speak English very well to communicate with foreign tourists. Like many of the other ethnic groups of Vietnam’s Northern mountainous regions, the Hmong plays a great number of traditional musical instruments, including ones made from bamboo. These instruments are sometimes played in concert on special occasions. They also have their own way of life, customs and traditional costumes.
