Tet is a national and family festival. It is an occasion for every Vietnamese to have a good time while thinking about the last year and the next year. At Tet, spring fairs are organized, streets and public buildings are brightly decorated and almost all shops are crowded with people shopping for Tet. At home, every is tidied, special food is cooked, offerings of food, fresh water, flowers and betel are made on the family altar with burning joss- sticks scenting the air. First-footing is made when the lucky visitor comes and children are given lucky money wrapped in a red tiny envelope. Tet is also a time for peace and love. During Tet, children often behave well and friends, relatives and neighbors give each other best wishes for the new year.
The clock bell hit exactly twelve hours. Everyone shouted together. From the villages, fireworks burst into the sky, glowing like day. This is the most beautiful and brilliant moment. My sisters ran to the gate to see. The beams of light fly into the sky, as if carrying all the wishes of human beings. The sound of firecrackers awakened everything, turning to spring. Heaven and earth in that magical moment gives people a feeling of overwhelming happiness. Everyone looked at each other silently, closed their eyes so that the spring air filled their hearts, to mingle with the changing season. On the ancestor’s altar, incense sticks were lit up. That’s when people secretly remember and thank their roots. After those sacred moments, people bustle together to pick buds or go out together. Out of the way bustling up. Especially young people, eager to go out in spring. They meet and wish them the best of luck. Someone broke home early, hoping that the joy will come throughout the year. Music is floating everywhere, spring songs instead of human wishes to nature …
