To all Vietnames people, Lunar New Year, also called Tet, is one of the most important celebrations throughout the year. It occurs in late January or early February, the time when spring comes. Before Tet, people have to do many preparations such as cleaning house or cooking traditional dishes. In Northern Vietnam, people usually make banh Chung, while in Southern provinces, people make banh Tet. They are all made from sticky rice, pork and mungbean wrapped in green dong leaves and then they are boiled for about 6 hours. On the first day of this occasion, people go to relatives’ house and give the elderly and children lucky money in a red envelope. The tradition of visiting relatives happens for the next two days and in the meantime, people have parties with traditional dishes prepared beforehand. Tet is a great time for family members gather and enjoy the moment they have together.

Tet is a national holiday. This is an opportunity for all Vietnamese to have a good time thinking about the old year and the next year. During Tet, spring fairs are held, and the streets and public facilities are not only brightly decorated, but most of the shops are crowded with Tet shoppers. At home, everything is cleaned, traditional food, other dishes, soft drinks, peach blossom and betel nut are placed on the ancestral altar along with incense sticks. Groundbreaking is done when a lucky guest comes to visit and the children receive lucky money. Tet is also a time for peace and love. During Tet, children usually behave well and friends, relatives and neighbors give each other best wishes for the new year.
