Historians are torn when asked to identify the birth of American culture. Some suggest that it took root in Jamestown, arguing that as soon as there were white people in America, they were already uniquely American. Others argue that the culture did not really differ from European cultures until the First Great Awakening. They suggest that the religious revival that spread throughout the colonies made Americans aware of other English settlers in the New World. And, they continue, since this revival took place in a more public way than it did in England, it was the birth of American community.
Still other historians place the origins of American culture on the battlefields of the French and Indian War. It is true that the conflict led indirectly to the American Revolution, which led, in turn, to America itself existing. However, it is a bit naïve to believe that violence can birth a peaceful culture. It is far more likely that a culture did not get created so much as slowly adapted and formed.
