My name is Daniel. I moved to this city three years ago and started attending St. Paul’s K street. I kept hearing about Grate Patrol- a strange name, until I learned it was called that because many homeless people sleep on the grates in winter to keep warm. “Doing Grate Patrol” means being at the church at 5.45 am on Saturday or Sunday to serve a sack breakfast(sandwich, boilled egg, fruit, and very hot coffee). I also learned that people who otherwise have no meal or something warm to drink depend on me and on the others who serve them.
Community service has meant getting to know a number of people whom I wouldn’t have met in any other way-both volunteers as well as my homeless friends.
Doing community service brings me joy, gives me purpose, and connects me with those in need.
