The test: The construction of new houses and office buildings is not controlled. This leads to people building in whatever style they want without thinking about design. Do the advantages of this trend outweigh the disadvantages? Design is very important in a society because it affects how people perceive things, their behavior, and also their interactions with one another. It’s something we often use for conversation pieces, too-it can make or break a room. That’s why it’s necessary that we have some sort of guideline that everyone adheres to, whether it be the government or an individual community. Without guidelines, design can lead to chaos. Following a guideline is not always a bad thing; in fact, it has many benefits. Aside from making sure that everything looks good in its surrounding environment and compliment each other well with the use of color, materials, etc., following templates also makes things faster when you need to build something-all you need is the needed supplies and manpower and you can start building right away. It also makes things more cost efficient because you no longer need to spend time deciding what design would look better for your environment-you already have everything planned out beforehand. So why don’t we have anything like this for new houses and office buildings? Because it is often done by the owner or developer, and they don’t have to adhere to any guidelines except those which are put in place by the government. This gets a little dicey when it comes to designs, because there are no standards-the owners can do what they want. They can be more creative so as to fit their preferences, but if one of those designs doesn’t look good in itself, then that’s it: it won’t be used anymore after the project has been completed. It becomes useless immediately. In other words, there is no way to do something, because no one knows what an appropriate design would look like. Basically, the designer will just make something that looks good in his or her own eyes-it often still has elements of what he or she originally planned for but it isn’t really a whole new environment. Now, this might be fine for the owner of a small building, but when it comes to large office buildings and apartment complexes then you have to question whether or not this is good practice. In big buildings (apartment complexes and skyscrapers) the same problem exists-you have a designer who makes up whatever he or she wants without having any guidelines to work under.
