Farid was doing his best to steer clear of the movers until
suddenly, he remembered his goldfish.
“What about Sparky?” he asked.
His parents stared at each other, open-mouthed, as his dad
clapped his hand to his forehead.
“Plenty of room for the fish,” the head mover offered.
“You can’t be serious,” Mom said. “How can you get a goldfish
from Lebanon to Detroit, Michigan?”
“The same way as everything else: on the boat!”
Six weeks later at the new house, a mover handed Sparky’s bowl to Farid. There was a letter too, with pictures.
“Dear Farid,” the letter began, “I’ve had quite an adventure.
First, I sailed on a small cargo ship from Lebanon to Spain. Here’s a picture of me and the captain. Then I moved to a large freighter that sailed from Spain to New York. Here’s a picture of me with the crew. Then I moved to a barge on the Hudson River. That took me
through the Erie Canal to another small boat, which crossed Lake
Erie to Detroit. Here’s that boat. Finally, a truck brought me to the door. Thanks for not forgetting me!”
