The Thai people were present in Vietnam more than 1000 years ago, with their own language and script. Thai people speak languages belonging to the Thai group of languages, belonging to the Thai-Kadai language. Among this group are the Thai language of the Thai people, the Lao language of the Lao people, the Shan language of the Myanmar people, and the Zhuang language of southern China. In our Vietnam, 8 ethnic minorities, including Bo Y, Giay, Lao, Lu, Nung, San Chay, Tay, Thai are all classified as Thai language group. Thai people reside in some of the following major provinces in Vietnam: Hoa Binh, Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Son La, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An. Thais in these eight provinces account for 97.6% of the population. According to the 2009 population and housing census, the Thai people in our country have 1,550,423 people, which is the third largest ethnic group in terms of population in Vietnam. This statistic compared with 10 years ago, in 1999 increased by more than 200,000 people. That is a moderate increase in the population of ethnic minorities in Vietnam.
