Banh Chung is a traditional food in Vietnam that has existed for a long time. Legend has it that: in the past, in order to choose a son to succeed the throne, the king showed that whoever made the best food would take over the throne and it was Lang Lieu – the person who made Banh Chung and Banh Giay.
The simple pair of cakes represents earth and heaven, bringing home flavor that helped Lang Lieu win and becomes king. Since then, Banh Chung is used to worshiping on Tet occasion and this fine custom is still preserved and handed down to this day by descendants.
Banh Chung has a square shape wrapped by a “lá dong”. Inside are sticky rice, green beans, pork, and “lá dong”. Rice must be soaked overnight. The “lá dong” must be big, green, if the leaves are plain, the better because the cake will be better. The Banh Chung is then neatly wrapped, square, tied with a pre-split rope.
Banh Chung creates a warm sacred atmosphere on Tet so it is a dish during Tet not to be missed in Vietnam.
